Reduction mammaplasty

Reduction mammaplasty

Breast reduction is a common procedure, made usually by women who suffer from pain in the back or the shoulders or who have large breasts. Sometimes the large size of the breasts may lead to an inflammation of the skin directly under the breasts or to loose breasts. This surgery is also suitable for women who are not pleased with their appearance because of particularly large breasts.

Usually the operation is carried out under general anaesthesia and a 24-hour-stay is recommended. The procedure aims to reduce, lift or recover the shape of the large breasts by removal of the excess tissue and skin and relocation of the nipples.

After a computer consultation the patient decides on the desired breast shape and size. The daily activity is regained after one or two weeks after the intervention. The tense feeling is possible to continue for 30 to 45 days after the operation, and the scars fade away in a few months.

Pregnancy and nursing may influence and change the size and shape of the breasts. In some cases nursing may be a reason for changes and that is why a consultation with a plastic surgeon is necessary.
