Lazer surgery of face and skin

Lazer surgery of the face and the skin

Candidates: Men and women from almost all ages with damaged (by pimples, measles, sun rays) or wrinkled skin. Particularly common patients are people with vertical wrinkles around the mouth, wrinkles in the area of the eyes, or with areas of uneven pigmentation or with loose skin of the upper or lower eyelid.

Purpose of the manipulation: Smoothing of the face and the subtle wrinkles by a lazer device with carbon dioxide (CO2), that removes the marks on the damaged skin. Smoothing of the outline of the eye line, the wrinkles in the areas of the eyes and the mouth, reduction of the visible face scars and the uneven pigmentation.

Duration: May last from a couple of minutes to one hour. It is possible that the patient may need more than one manipulation.

Anaesthesia: It is local or general. Usually the treatment is in an outpatients' department.

Side effects: Temporary flow and discomfort; the treated areas will be lighter; excessive sensitivity towards sunlight; increased sensitivity towards make-up; areas of pink or red skin that may last up to 6 months after the operation.

Risks: Burns or wounds caused by the lazer warmth; stress condition; abnormal changes of the colour of the skin. Herpes or lichen may appear if the patient is predisposed to such diseases.

Recovery: The return of the patient to his/her normal daily routine is possible 2 weeks after the operation. Tenser activities are possible after 4 to 6 weeks. The recovery of the natural skin colour and the complete disappearance of the red and pink spots is from 2 to 6 months. The recovery of the pigmentation and a permission to take sunbaths again is in the period between the 6th and 12th month.

Details: The recovery period varies depending on the depth of the lazer surgery. Of course a skin-deep treatment will require a smaller period of time to recover. That type of surgery may be carried out repeatedly, and the result is the same as with the deeper lazer surgery. It can be combined with face-lifting and liposuction of the face. Coloured spots may appear about 3 weeks after the operation and may require special treatment with suitable face cream for about 2 months. If the operation is not the first of its type for the patient, he/she should inform the surgeon, because this fact may also influence the result. That applies also to the use of drugs such as Accutane™ or Retin-™.
